My first trip on the AT. Covered about 10 miles but that includes some double coverage. Arrived way late and hiked into Roan High Knob well after midnight. There was a gaggle of scouts camping in the area.

I had looked at online maps but had nothing for navigation with me so I headed north on the trail thinking I was heading to my destination. I was not well prepared since this was not my desired destination. There were fires in the Linville Gorge so I had to make another plan without the help of maps. I mean, its hard to get lost on the AT, but you can certainly go in the wrong direction!

Eventually I made it to Carver’s Gap and beyond and found a place I love almost as much as Black Balsam in Pisgah. Wide open spaces, grassy meadows, rhododenron in full bloom. But a lot of people....

Anyway, I hiked out during the second night since I had pitched my tent carelessly and the winds pulled it down and punched a hole in the top of the tent.

Another reason to dump the Honda: not great for sleeping.
