This was a docile trip on Section 2 which features one major rapid: Big Shoals. Described as a ‘veritable whitewater gymnasium,’ it is a fun place to play, even at low water, since access is good to repeat the run. The huge rock in the middle is the desired lunch spot on Section 2 so bring your spoon if you plan to eat jelly!

My constant outdoor companion, Larry Kemmerlin, as well as Tim Huebel, who is funnier than his brother Rob, were part of the trio. Low water on Section 2 means a lot of boat scraping and that is what we had.

Accommodations were the luxurious front porch of a friend’s cabin. This place is really a gem when you think of mountain getaways but it is unused most of the time so the porch was the cleaner place to sleep! We rounded the trip off with a roadside visit to a lama farm and a trip to Stumphouse tunnel.
