This trip was in December 2005, and Larry Kemmerlin was my companion for the weekend. Trailhead was at Daniel Boone camp. From there, we hiked to Deep Gap and the next day to Cold Mountain. Although well used, Deep Gap provides a great place to camp if you are beat to a pulp once you reach the saddle.

There is no water at Deep Gap. Hiking further up the trail to the summit of Cold Mountain will bring you to a clean water source right on the trail.

Deep Gap is a good place to camp since you are right between two very scenic places: Cold Mountain and the Narrows. Both places are not to be missed.

We carried way too much junk for this trip.

My pack weighed in around 60 lbs, plus photo gear and tripod. Following this trip, my goal became 40 lbs or less for the pack.
