A truly amazing place.

If you mountainbike, you must go to Moab. I have never experienced anything on a bike more thrilling than riding on slickrock. Its not really slick though. I bought nearly treadless tires for the trip because the porous rock is easily gripped by bald rubber. Approach angles can be very steep yet your tires hold like glue.

Moab, population around 4000 or so, has more bicycle shops per capita than anywhere else in the nation. Maybe its just local legend and pride. My brother and I were out there in 1998 and Rim Cyclery was our choice for parts and gear. But watch it when they recommend a good ‘novice’ trail. ‘Uh... yea, you should ride Amassaback. Its pretty tame.’ Uh huh. I’ve never been so frustrated on two wheels than when I was on that trail of broken boulders. We watched local kids ride up like they were hiking. I was amazed. Must be similar to the experience a westerner has when they come east to ski our ice slopes.

Up the Creek Campground is THE place to camp. CLEAN bathrooms that smell nice. The place was like hanging out in your own backyard. Even though we were in the middle of the desert, there is a creek which runs through Moab and it feeds the green grass and tall hardwoods in the yard providing a wonderful camp experience.

Local food is fantastic. We did some cooking as well but nothing compared to the Tex Mex food bought locally.
